Find Your “You Free for a Call?” Mentor

Yesterday, I sent a quick message: "You free for a chat?". One call later, I’d untangled my thoughts and had clarity on my next steps.

This business isn’t my first, but it’s the first one where I’ve gone all in, and that lands differently.

I’ve been so fortunate; I’m working with great clients and doing work I love. But the thing I’ve found most challenging is the feeling of connection. That’s where the people in my life come in.

That call was to a friend who’s long been one of the most impactful people in my life, a real-life mentor. Not someone who tells me what I want to hear, but someone who listens, shares their perspective and offers advice that makes me look at situations and opportunities in a different way. You know the type, the person you can let your guard down with, gremlins and all.

Over the years, and even now, I’ve had the privilege of mentoring others, too. It’s taught me how much of what we struggle with is shared. The difference almost always comes down to experience.

When mentoring someone, I usually guide them through a path I’ve already walked. And when I lean on my mentors, they’re doing the same for me.

One of the best lessons I’ve learned since going all in with inpurpose is how willing people are to help if you ask. That call and the subsequent clarity came simply because I asked.

So, the takeaways, I guess....

  • Find your “You free for a call?” mentor. That person who gets it and won’t just hype you up but will give you the reality check you need when you need it.

  • If you don’t have that person in your life, find them. Send a message on LinkedIn or drop them an email. You might be surprised at how willing people are to share their time and insights.

  • Don’t underestimate the power of building your own support system. For me, it’s not just loved ones or mentors; it’s my therapist, coach, PT, and even cleaner. Each one helps me keep moving forward, whether with clarity or just a bit more breathing room.

Running a business or leading a team isn’t easy, but it’s a lot easier when you build your team of mentors, truth-tellers, and supporters. They make all the difference.

Sometimes, the clarity you’re searching for is as simple as typing: "You free for a call?"

Take care and I hope you’re having a winning week!
